How to Prepare a Print-Ready PDF: Margins, Grayscale, and Resolution Checks

Documents that looked immaculate on screen have a long history of humiliating their authors at the print shop: text kissing the paper's edge, vivid charts collapsing into gray mud, logos dissolving into pixel soup. The screen forgives; the printer does not. Whether you are producing a client handout, a conference one-pager, or fifty copies of a training manual, a ten-minute pre-flight check saves you from paying for a reprint. Here is a practical checklist you can run entirely in your browser, plus an honest note at the end about where browser tools stop and professional prepress begins.

Start with geometry. Most home and office printers cannot print to the paper's edge, so anything closer than about 12 millimeters to the boundary risks being clipped. Commercial printing has the opposite concern: backgrounds meant to reach the edge need bleed, extra image beyond the trim line. Inspect your pages at actual size, and if elements sit dangerously close to the edge or inconsistent white borders crept in from mixed sources, the crop tool on PdfWill lets you trim pages to a uniform, intentional frame. Now the honest boundary.
