Why Does My PDF Look Blurry? Diagnosis First, Then the Realistic Fixes
Start with the single most useful diagnostic: zoom in to 400 percent. If the text stays razor sharp at any magnification, it is real vector text and the file itself is fine — your blur is a display problem, not a document problem. If the text dissolves into soft, blocky pixels as you zoom, the page is actually an image, typically a scan or an exported screenshot, and the blur is baked into the file. This one test splits every blurry-PDF complaint into two very different categories, with very different prognoses, so do it before trying any fix.
Cause one: the source image was low resolution from the start. A page photographed with a phone in dim light, a scan made at 96 DPI, or a screenshot of a document will never contain enough pixels to render crisply on paper or a large monitor. The standard for readable scanned text is around 300 DPI. This is the case with no software cure — no tool, PdfWill included, can honestly invent detail that was never captured. Sharpening filters make edges look harsher, not more legible. The fix is to go back to the source and rescan at 300 DPI or higher.
Cause two: the file was sharp once, but aggressive compression destroyed it. Cause three: the document is fine and your viewer is the problem. Test the same file in a different viewer or print one page; if the print is sharp, stop editing the file — it was never broken.
